Managed to hit one of those valleys tonight. I don’t know if it was the weather – could’ve been. I’ve been meaning to do so many things lately and talk to so many of you…but I’ve been stuck in a rut of routine.

I’m thinking of mainly not calling Dan – or Daaaaaaaaaaan – as he called me back in November. It’s a call I’ve been meaning to return – but just haven’t figured out when it won’t be awkward to make that call.

I’ve been thinking of Ms. Reed – my mom away from mom – who has to deal with heaps upon heaps – and she should know that I love her – but I suck at getting things done.

I’ve been thinking about all my friends that I haven’t been in touch with lately – and who I would love to see more often.

I’ve been thinking about people I shouldn’t be – and even though they despise me – I wish them well.

And that’s probably why I got bored and took the opportunity of a sudden squall to make this video.

I miss you all.

After a long evening on the town during PLA 08 – before throwing myself onto bed and into slumbers – I took it all in for a moment from my room at the Westin – and tried to balance out the chaos. I was grinning ear to ear while I filmed this — and it all looked much more wonderful at the time. Still – it’s interesting to look back on something so amazing, and be amazed, by my own amazement.

Last night I headed to the East Side of Detroit and the Atwater Brewery to pitch in on a fundraiser for the residents of the Forest Arms Apartments. A few weeks back the apartments were gutted by fire leaving hundreds homeless, many of them students of my alma mater.

I met up with Carlie and Eva, had a few drinks and a really good time. I heard about the event via motorcityblog, saw Carlie online and threw it out there for something to do. An hour later we were all gangbusters at the bar and getting reacquainted after not seeing each other for many months.

There were DJs and Bands and a Fashion show – which was rather interesting and can be seen above.

It was good to get out of the house. Tonight it’s Ferndale and the New Way.

Went to see Darjeeling Limited tonight. I had the good fortune of going alone. Then I had the double good fortune of having an empty theater. It was well worth it – because given life as it is – this was a good movie to see in solitude.

Three brothers meet up a year after their father’s death on a train somewhere in India. The goal – apparently a spiritual journey. What it amounts to? A look at how we often try to itemize the mad rush of life into moments of meaning instead of taking the whole as it comes in its plenitude.

The Wes Anderson experience is present throughout – with swiveling cameras and the continuous colorful backgrounds – but the underlying theme manifests itself through periods of grief and the characters’ attempts to manage the pain of daily existence by itemizing life either through directions & orders, a carefully and meticulously composed itinerary, drugs or spirituality. It is an all too common approach at capturing the unending stream of life and death and trying to embody it into a capsule of meaning.

It was a poignant and timely movie – recommended.

So the navigation bar looks like it’s coming along ok. I’m starting to feel more comfortable about posting here with the environment becoming somewhat more friendly again. The next step is to dig deeper and bring out the archives so that the actual site becomes usable again. I was somewhat startled last night when I came upon the earliest entries on this blog from May of 2002 — written while visiting Willi in Alaska. It was right after watching Blogumentary – I must’ve been feeling nostalgic.

I’ve been keeping busy, but without the classes to keep me under lock and key I finally have some free moments to tinker again. It’s nice – but having let the site dilapidate over the past two years isn’t going to be impressive to those who come lurking to check up on my online life when I’m looking for the j-o-b. It’ll probably take a while – but I’m guessing the cobwebs will be cleared in about a month – and little posts like this one will likely get me back in the groove shortly thereafter.

Next actions include typing up an about page for myself and restoring usability…

Dreams are wonderful and elusive creatures that I don’t have to worry about catching. They come as they please and often don’t leave anything behind to let me know they were there in the first place.

Dreams seem to make their own schedules effortlessly. Even when I can’t find free time for myself.

That’s why I like dreams.

Dreams make you shout out strange things in the night and you wake up in mid-sentence and begin to realize just how crazy you are and you’re glad when you’re sleeping alone but when you’re not…you’re glad the person next to you laughs before falling back asleep.

Dreams help you have a belief that you will find the time to redesign that webpage back to how you had it when everybody liked it and you actually felt like posting to it every now and again.

Dreams are for dreamers.

Dreams aren’t of the earth and probably shouldn’t be of earthly things. I wish I could have that one dream every night where I have to cross my legs just right if I’m to fly above the Earth and everybody’s amazed and pointing and I’m like “Damn, I can’t believe they haven’t figured this shit out yet. All ya gotta do is cross your legs right.”

Dreams are remembering nights spent in a tent on a pallet in the Alaska Summer.

Dreams are anything you want them to be.

Dreams are anything but cliché. Which is what this post most certainly is. And I just ended a sentence on a preposition because I’m breakin’ ALL the rules.

I’m gonna bring it back. Now that everybody’s gone.

Or maybe not.

Tonight I attended a couple of art openings with a friend in the great city of Detroit. It was a beautiful night, nearly 50 degrees, clear skies – a slight breeze that wasn’t cold but rather hinted at winter’s dying efforts.

I say this knowing full well that by doing so I will cause it to snow at least 4 times in the next two weeks.

It was a nice way to spend the third day of the extravaganza that is Spring Break 2006!!!!! Likely to be the last spring break I ever have in my life. Isn’t that horrific?

Yesterday was spent in Ann Arbor at a symposium concerning libraries and mass digitization — and I’ll probably write something up about that tomorrow – even though it has already been written up to death in cyberspace — noone has yet managed to do it from my perspective.

Anyways. The Openings.

I haven’t been to an opening in a while — and these galleries were buzzing. People were knocking elbows and it was crazy hectic crowded. So aside from habitually picking at myself – which I do when I’m completely freaked out, it was quite the experience. My friend’s friend Maurice – who had a few works in a showing at the Cass Cafe – was kind enough to let us in on another showing a few blocks down on Woodward. The three of us headed over there — and it was AWESOME. I loved it. I don’t think I’ve ever thought of throwing down $350 for something before on the spot — but never have I wanted to more.

Take a gander for yourself at some of Chris Dean’s lenticular art. All you KISS fans out there – pay particular attention to that first work in the series…

This link’ll refresh you on what lenticular is — and you should read the info link on Dean’s own page — where he talks about his work. Reading it over again, his use of the word “fun” is EXACTLY it. That room was electric — and people were beaming. Great stuff.
